  • Erin O’Toole welcomes former PEI Liberal Minister of Health, Doug Currie, to Conservative team

Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole welcomed a new candidate to his team today. Prince Edward Island’s former Liberal Minister of Health, Doug Currie, has been acclaimed as the Conservative Party of Canada candidate in the riding of Charlottetown for the next federal election. Currie served as MLA for District 11 Charlottetown-Parkdale from 2007 to 2017 and held several cabinet roles during that time, including his tenure as Health Minister.

“It’s been frustrating for all Canadians to watch the government’s on-going failure to procure and deliver vaccines for Canadians,” said O’Toole. “We want the government to succeed – for the sake of every Canadian. I’m proud to be welcoming Doug to our Conservative team as someone with Cabinet experience in the Health portfolio, and as someone who understands we cannot secure jobs without a vaccine, we cannot secure our economic recovery without a vaccine, and we cannot secure the future without a vaccine. With Canada sitting at just 1.46% of our population vaccinated, we’re well behind the pace of other nations. Our Conservative team cannot accept this kind of failure with so much at stake.”

“As the federal government navigates the post-pandemic economic recovery, we need a strong voice in Ottawa to ensure the needs of the people of Charlottetown are being met,” says Currie. “That’s why I’m joining the Erin O’Toole team and Canada’s Conservatives. We need a competent, compassionate and prudent plan that supports the well-being of the people of Charlottetown and the unique needs of Islanders for generations to come.”

In addition to his time as PEI Health Minister, Currie has extensive experience leading bipartisan provincial and federal healthcare initiatives. He is also a former educator and principal and has served as PEI’s Minister of Education on two separate occasions. He is currently Vice President of Corporate Services, Strategic Development and Stakeholder Relations at Holland College.

Currie is a lifelong resident of Charlottetown where he lives with his family. He holds Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees from the University of Prince Edward Island and a Master of Education degree from the University of New Brunswick.

“We are very pleased that Doug Currie is our candidate for the next federal election, someone I know as a quality, well-liked individual with political and cabinet experience,” said Ron Profit, President of the Charlottetown Conservative Electoral District Association. “Doug is passionate and has a proven dedication to the community and to the people of Charlottetown.”
