Statement from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre on Hellenic Heritage Month

Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on Hellenic Heritage Month:

“In March, many Greeks in Canada celebrate Hellenic History and Heritage Month to honour the countless ways that Canada, and the entire Western world, have been profoundly shaped by Greeks and by the legacy of ancient Greece.

“Often called the birthplace of democracy, ancient Greece was home to heroic figures who still inspire today. Figures like Homer, Plato and Aristotle, to name just a few, are people whose ideas formed the cornerstone of an entire civilization and whose accomplishments remain profoundly relevant.

“But the history of Greece did not end in the classical period. For centuries, Greeks have fought to preserve their treasured heritage and maintain the legacy of their ancestors. From the epic battles of the classical period to their fierce resistance against the Axis invasions of the 1940s, Greeks have boldly and heroically defended the values of freedom and democracy.

“Today, the invaluable contributions of Greeks to Canada and the entire world continue to propel us forward. Canada is blessed to be the home of over a quarter of a million people of Greek heritage. Our lives are enriched by the incredible traditions, food, art and culture they generously share with their neighbours.

“As we celebrate Hellenic Heritage Month, I encourage all Canadians to reflect on the incredible Hellenic inheritance that has helped shape Canada as a land of freedom and opportunity for all.”
